The DMZ Revisited - 13 Days

An example of a general thirteen-day tour focussing on aspects of the Vietnam War including three full days visiting major sites of operations and actions involving American forces in the DMZ and Central Highlands areas.

Highlights:
Several elements of this tour are designed from a Vietnamese perspective to place the Vietnam War in today’s context. Combined with other leisure and cultural destinations, the tour offers an overview of the new Vietnam looking forward to a better future.

For the battle site elements of this tour, we use good English-speaking guides with a detailed understanding of the actions that took place. We also endeavour to locate Vietnamese people with first-hand knowledge of relevant wartime events wherever feasible.

Your tour starts with three days in Hanoi, beginning with ....
... a transfer from the airport, time to relax, a Welcome dinner and a light-hearted introduction to Vietnam’s rural culture.

Over the next two days, you’ll visit some of the city’s museums and Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, with a free afternoon to wander around Hoan Kiem Lake and the famous Old Quarter.

You’ll also visit the International Friendship Village for Vietnamese veterans and Orange Agent victims. If you think that sounds like a guilt trip, think again – you’ll get a really friendly welcome from adults and children alike, and leave with a warm glow inside!

Two Days in the Central Highlands
The first will take you to meet some of the ethnic minority communities living in and around the Kon Tum. You’ll have a jolly evening with the villagers – dinner, dancing and singing, and plenty of rice wine.

From there, you meander north up Highway 14 visiting ethnic communities and some of the famous battle sites in the Highlands area, such as Phoenix Airfield and Charlie Hill. Eventually you’ll arrive at Kham Duc, close to the Laos border for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Two days in Quang Ngai province
Leaving the Highlands, your route takes you down to the coastal strip and Quang Ngai town. On the way, you’ll stop off at Chien Dang Towers, a good example of the remarkable remnants of the ancient Champa Kingdom. On the following day, you’ll visit My Lai, the site of the infamous massacre in March, 1968, set among particularly attractive scenery and now a peaceful haven. There will be time to swim nearby and visit a couple of villages as an antidote to a difficult experience.

A day in Hoi An, and another visiting the My Son Sanctuary and travelling to Hue
Hoi An is delightful – a quaint ancient town tucked away in the middle of a modern city. Apart from its rich heritage and traditions, it’s an oasis of calm and good restaurants. My Son was the spiritual heart of the Cham people – it’s an evocative place set in a verdant valley. From there, the route to Hue takes you north over the Hai Van Pass – the panoramic views make a pause for photographs essential.

Two days in the DMZ
A journey north takes you to Quang Tri province and Dong Ha town, where you’ll spend the night. These two days take in many famous battle sites with names etched deeply into the annals of history - La Vang church, the Rock pile, Khe Sanh, and many more – before returning to Hue.

A day in Hue and your departure day
On your last full day, you’ll cover the main attractions of Vietnam’s Imperial capital. A cruise up the peaceful Perfume River, a graceful pagoda on its bank, the magnificent mausoleum of Emperor Ming Mang, the mighty Citadel and the remains of the Forbidden Purple City, and a visit to Dong Ba Market.

Finish the day with dinner in one of Hue’s famous ‘garden houses’, Hue cuisine prepared, cooked, served and explained by the householder, and you’ll have a fitting climax to your tour, and be ready to fly back to Hanoi on the following morning.
